My Dogs Digging Problem – How Do I Stop Him?
Sometimes your dog can start digging and it is difficult at the time to know why he is doing what he is doing. If he is digging up your back garden, for instance, piece by piece, over a period of time, you want to stop him but do not know how to change his behaviour.
A behaviour such as this might not seem to bother you at the time, but the longer it is left uncorrected the more difficult it becomes to change. Also if the dog is left alone all day, that could be the problem.
Start to solve the problem by looking for possible causes, then try eliminating each one until you find what the cause might be.
Does he get enough exercise? Taking him to the park every day for two or more hours is about the right level of exercise for a nine month old dog. Do you stay with him when he does the digging in the garden? If not, why not spend some time with him, trying to correct him.
Boredom and lack of exercise might be the cause of the digging. Try spending more time with him and playing some games together, to take his mind off wanting to dig. Try to give him more exercise during the day as well, by walking him at times other than his regular walks.
If you cannot walk him yourself, ask a neighbour or friend if they can help, or use a dog walker. Good luck with solving the problem.
