Crying At Night

You may be upset by the crying sessions at the first few nights. You feel very helpless and somehow to blame. This is a perfectly natural occurrence-nearly all puppies cry when they sleep alone in a new home (or for the first time.

They miss the warmth and companionship of their litter mates.

Try to make up for this lack by providing something warm for the pup to snuggle up to. A rubber hot water bottle will serve wrapped with flannel for the puppy to cuddle up to. Fill it about two-thirds full of slightly hotter than lukewarm water. Electric heating pads have been used, but these are safe only when the connecting wire can be buried under the bedding so securely that it cannot be chewed. The loud tick of an alarm clock placed near the pup’s bed may help to ease the lonely feeling.

Few Visitors
Next morning the puppy will be up bright and early literally screeching for something to eat. Open the crate door and let him scamper around the floor as you clean out his box and give him a change of blanket and newspapers. Keep the door of his room closed if there is any chance of his investigating the stairway and falling down.

Now your problems will begin-and they will not come from the puppy either. Everybody up and down the block is going to be interested in your pup; everybody is going to love him and itch to get their hands on him. And this can invite trouble. Perhaps they have a dog too, and out of the kindness of their hearts they will bring him to sniff noses with your puppy.

Or possibly their puppy is home, sick, so cannot call in person; but he can send his germs on the hands, feet and clothing of his owners. This is one way contagious diseases are spread, especially among young dogs. Your puppy may have been safeguarded by inoculation against the serious puppy diseases. If not, explain the situation to your visitors or make up sonic excuse. Then select a veterinarian, take your puppy there and have him inoculated so you won’t have anything to fear

Aside from the possibility of disease, young puppies are easily excited, upset and over-tired by too many visitors. Until your pup has become used to his new home, try to avoid attention from strangers; also do what you can to guard him from loud noise and confusion.
