The rear foot is placed down before the front, resulting in a four beat cadence, varying with speed from an isochronal (1, 2, 3, 4) to near a pace (1.2….3.4). To be registered as a Castilian, a horse has to go through strict inspection standards of gait, strength, confirmation and temperament.

The Castilian horse has a balanced confirmation. The head is noble set on a strong neck. The body is smooth and well muscled; legs are short compared to their robust body; the back is long and narrow; and the mane, forelock and tail are luxurious, silky and abundant.

The most common coat colors are black, chestnut, brown, bay, buckskin, palomino, gray, roan and dun, but gray and dark skinned are most desirable.

The Castilian horse is used for pleasure riding, valued for its natural lateral movement, as show horse and for improving other breeds.

Thousand years ago the breed existed on this island and there are paintings and horse skeletons as prove. During the Arabian conquest the island was full of Arabian horses. At that time and later during the Turkish occupation in the 17^th century native mares where crossed with Arabian stallions and that was the beginning of the modern Cretan horse. During the World War II many horses were imported to Albania, but they couldn’t suit the Albanian conditions, so horses that survived were transported back to Greece.

The first stud book that registered Cretan horses was opened in 1994. In this period breeders and enthusiasts also started a conservation program, in which they are protecting the breed of extinction. Today the populationnumber of the breed is very low, counting only 100 representatives in the breed register.

The Cretan (Messara) horse is a light draft horse with small and muscular body that is standing approximately from 12.2 – 14 hands high. This makes them to be classed as pony sized horses. The most common colors in the breed are bay, dark brown, black and gray.

Physically, the Cretan horse resembles and has some characteristics of their Arabian ancestors. The head is small and refined with big and expressive eyes, small muzzle, large nostrils and short ears. The neck is arched, body is compact, chest is narrow and the back is short. The legs are strong, feet are thin and they have a natural pacing gait, which gives the rider a comfortable and an easy ride. This gait was called by Turks rah van and it resemble to camel’s pace, so they don’t gallop. They are also able to walk easily on rock ground and uneven surfaces.

In the past the Cretan horse was used for light draft work and for transportation. Today, they are used for the same purposes, but are becoming interesting for riding and racing events in their native country. The most famous event is held in Stroumboulas Plateau. Cretan stallions crossed with female donkeys, called Jennies, will result with offspring called hinnies.

The Pros and Cons of a “Real” Easter Bunny

As pets, bunnies have some things in common with cats and dogs. For instance:

• Bunnies grow up. Once they become rabbits, they may not be perceived to be as cute as they once were.
• Bunnies must be spayed or neutered to control hormones, prevent overpopulation, and to help prevent them from marking their territory. Rabbits can have a litter of six to eight babies each month.
• Like cats, bunnies can be easily litter-trained. They can also be trained to walk on a leash.

They also differ from dogs and cats in many ways:

• While bunnies certainly have their own way of communicating via “thumping” or “binkies,” they cannot express themselves vocally or physically like cats and dogs. So, it can take a while to fully appreciate a bunny’s personality.
• Bunnies are fragile and as such, must be handled carefully. Their hind legs must always be supported when they’re picked up because they will feel insecure and panic, resulting in a scratching, biting bunny. Also, the spines on rabbits are weak and can be easily broken when mishandled.
• Because bunnies are prey animals, they need to feel safe in a structured setting. They don’t travel well, and should not be given to young children as pets.
• Veterinary care for rabbits is often more expensive than a vet visit for a cat or dog.
• Bunnies can be messy. Their main diet consists of timothy hay, which can end up all over the house. They also love to shred cardboard, newspapers and phone books.
• Your house would need to be “bunny-proof,” as they are notorious chewers. They’ll chew, scratch and dig on furniture, cabinets and electrical cords. They need to be given lots of toys to keep them busy.

A bird cage will be the first thing that you need to buy. After all, your pet is going to need to live somewhere. You are going to want the biggest cage you can afford to get. This is where your bird will live, and he will want room to fly around. The bigger the bird, the more room you will need. Cages made of metal are easier to clean, and cleaning the cage is something you will have to do regularly. Before looking at bird cages, decide on the species of bird that you want. Different species of birds require different kinds of cages. Try to put your cage near a window so it can have sunlight and fresh air. However, you don’t want to put your bird near any vents.

All pets benefit from training and this includes birds. A natural physical behavior would be stepping up and is a fairly easy command to teach your bird. Added benefits of teaching your bird this command will include your ability to enforce your higher status, it will help your bird overcome his natural fear, and it will strengthen the bond between you.

Your training sessions should be short, around 15 minutes.

Always make sure to train in a room that has no distractions, be sure to be consistent, once you order a command make sure you stick with it. You should watch your bird closely for signs that show he is tired, afraid, or getting aggressive.

If you and your bird have not bonded much you will want to spend a few training sessions where you allow him to just get used to you. You can do this by putting your hand in the bird’s cage, as you do this move your hand closer to the bird each time you place it in the cage. Allow the bird to perch as he feels comfortable and if you wish you could tempt him with a treat.

During initial training you may wish to use a stick in place of your finger. Get the bird used to this by placing it in the cage and letting him look it over.

Always remember whatever you do to end the session with positive reinforcements.

Gently push above the right side of the bird’s breast above his legs with your finger or stick. Whether using your finger or stick you should always make sure to place them above whatever the bird is perched on. Once the bird is stepping onto your finger say “up” or something to that effect, just remember to stick with whatever you end up saying.

Hand out a small treat once your bird does as you have commanded; hand out some verbal praise as well. In some cases a bird may try and use their beak to help them up, do not jerk away because this will teach the bird that they have an advantage over you. Also, he will be hesitant to step up if the finger is pulled away.

The more comfortable your bird becomes you can take him out of the cage and train in other environments. Chances are as you leave the cage he may pay more attention to your training.

As your bird learns the command they will associate it with good things happening like attention and treats, and as training continues you could reward by allowing your bird time on a play gym. And finally, think about finding other bird lovers in your community and share ideas, that’s what we did here in Champaign.
