By some accounts, the American Shorthair came to North America with the earliest English settlers. Some even wonder whether their ancestors came over on the Mayflower, as history records the ship having several rat-hunting cats. Over the centuries, North Americans kept cats to help them fight rats and other pests, but also increasingly as pets. Very often, these cats were similar to American Shorthairs.

The American Keuda’s history is still very much in development, as the breed has not been finalized. More properly speaking, the breed is not a true cat breed but rather a “type,” on its way to becoming a breed as breeders refine the animals’ features through selective breeding.

The breed began in a study from the 1980s, the “Kitten Evaluation Under Direct Assessment.” The KEUDA was attempting to determine the best characteristics for a barn cat. The barn cats studied were taken from New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. The animals were bred together in the course of the study.

There is a lot of discussion as to whether Keudas have any Egyptian Mau ancestry, and if so, how much. The controversy arises because of the physical similarities between the two breeds. Yet Keudas come in a much broader variety of physical appearances. Individual Keudas come in a much wider variety of coat colors and patterns than Maus; they often more closely resemble Siamese, Havana Brown, or other cat breeds.

The American Curl breed is one of the newest cat breeds. The first American Curl was a cat named Shulamith. In June 1981, Shulamith showed up in the front yard of the home of Grace and Joe Ruga. The Rugas adopted the cat, along with another cat, Panda, who appeared to be Shulamith’s sister, and who ran away after two weeks. The Rugas and Shulamith became attached to each other. After Shulamith gave birth in December 1981, the Rugas decided that the cats’ distinctive curled ears were the signs of a new breed of cat. Shulamith had several more litters which established the new breed.

On October 23, 1983, the Rugas presented the new American Curl breed at a Cat Fanciers Assocation show in Palm Springs, California. In drafting the breed standard for the new cat breed, the authors were careful to allow for out-breeding with non-pedigreed domestic cats that closely resembled Shulamith, the original American Curl. Allowing for out-breeding was meant to keep the breed free of inbreeding

While these cats may look like bobcats, there’s no actual relation. American Bobtails were first bred in the US in the 1970s. The breed was recognized by the International Cat Association in 1989. American Bobtails became especially popular toward the end of the twentieth century.

The breed’s distinctive bobbed tail is the result of a genetic mutation. Despite obvious similarities with the Japanese Bobtail, the two breeds are utterly unrelated and the mutated bobtail gene is different in each case.

While these cats resemble ancient Egyptian statues of revered felines, we don’t actually know whether they are descended from Egyptian cats or just look that way.

The breed was first called “Abyssinian” towards the end of the nineteenth century. The cat might have been named “Abyssinian” for the war England was fighting in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) at the time. A lithograph printed at the time shows a cat that looks like today’s Abyssinian breed, with a note that the cat was brought from Abyssinia at the end of the war.

Genetic research indicates the cats likely came from coastal regions of the Indian Ocean as well as Southeast Asia. There is speculation that the breed might have been brought to England from India during the colonial period.

The breed was crossed with several others in the early twentieth century, giving the breed its unique variations of markings and colorations.

In the early 1900s, some Abyssinians were brought to the US, but the breed did not make a big splash until the 1930s. The cats brought to the US from England in the 1930s formed the basis for the breeding program from which modern Abyssinian cats are descended.

Even though there are people asserting that Tonkinese cats have their origin dating back to the early 1800s, it is commonly believed that the cat evolved as a recent cross between the Siamese and Burmese cat breeds. The first known Tonkinese cat, Wong Mau, is said to have imported into America in 1930. It was a mink hybrid, which had also served as the founding cat of the Burmese breed. The period between early 1900s and 1950 saw Tonkinese characteristics being bred out of Siamese and Burmese, resulting in 2 distinct breeds. By 1970s, Siamese and Burmese breeds were merged once again, resulting in the creation of the Tonkinese cats. However, it was only in the year 2001 that Tonkinese cats were moved from hybrid classification and confirmed as an established breed.

Appearance
Tonkinese cats are of medium size and have well-developed muscular strength. They are very dense and surprisingly heavy when lifted (much more heavy that they appear to be). These cats have typical oval-shaped paw. Their head is in a modified wedge-shape and the ears are large, set towards the outside of their head. Tonkinese cats are famous for their brilliant gold or blue-green eyes and a coat that is beautiful, sleek and soft. These cats come in a rainbow of colors, intermediate between their Burmese and Siamese parent breeds, mainly including blue, champagne, natural and platinum. Their coat features a unique pattern, known as “mink”, which comprises of shaded “points” like the Siamese, with the body colored in a shade corresponding with the point color. However, some Tonkinese cats are also known to have solid colors.

Tonkinese are active, alert, playful and people-oriented cats. They are warm and loving and crave for attention and interaction. They are very intelligent and supervise all human activities, mainly because of their curious nature. They delight their owners with playful antics and mingle well with other pets, especially Oriental, Burmese, Siamese and Snowshoe cats, apart from their own breed. History
Turkish Angora cats, representing one of the breeds of domestic cats, are known to have descended from the African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica). In the mountainous regions of Eastern Anatolia, the cats used to get isolated. With time, inbreeding started to take place and through natural selection, the African wildcats evolved into longhaired breeds, one of which was the Turkish Angora. In the late 16th century, these longhaired cats were imported to Britain and France, from Asia Minor, Persia and Russia. However, the cats came to be used for the purpose of improving the coat on the Persian, bringing them to the brink of extinction. The condition improved with time.

It was only by the early 17th century that Turkish Angora was recognized as a distinct breed in Europe. The year 1917 saw the Government of Turkey start a breeding program for protecting pure white Turkish Angoras with blue and amber eyes, considered a national treasure, in conjunction with the Ankara Zoo. In 1963, a Turkish Angora was brought to the United States and ten years later, it was accepted as a championship pedigreed breed, by the Cat Fanciers’ Association. Though, initially, only white Angoras were recognized in America, by 1978, American registries started accepting the Turkish Angora in a large number of colors and patterns.

Appearance
Turkish Angora is a medium-sized cat. It is finely boned, with firm muscular structure, silky, medium-long length coat and no undercoat. The head is massive, with a two plane profile, and the ears are pointed and large. These cats have large, almond shaped eyes, with color ranging from green, gold and green-gold to copper, blue and odd-eyed (say, one green eye and one amber eye). While pure white is the main color of Turkish Angora, they come in other colors too. These include black, blue, red, cream, silver, smoke, tortoiseshell, blue-cream, and all the shades of tabby (in some cases, with white trim). They have a kinked or abnormal tail. It is long and ‘brush’-like, with all the hair being of one length and creating a fox-brush effect.

History
Turkish Van is a rare and ancient breed of cats, which was developed in central and southwest Asia, the area which today encompasses the countries of Iran, Iraq, southwest Soviet Union and eastern Turkey. The modern history of the cat began in 1955, when they were introduced in England. Laura Lushington and Sonia Halliday were traveling through Turkey, in 1955, where they noticed that the cats in the Van area of Eastern Turkey had a striking resemblance to the traditional Angora cats. The only difference was that instead of being pure white, their coat had auburn head markings and a faintly ringed auburn tail.

Laura took two of the Turkish cats, which were not related to each other, and brought them back with her, to Britain. She got them mated and the result was kittens with the same auburn markings, confirming the breed to be natural, not manmade. Laura is the one who suffixed the term ‘Van’ after the Turkish cat and it became to be known as Turkish Van Cat. The cat breed was introduced in America only in the 1970s. Fifteen years later, in 1985, it was granted the Turkish Van Championship status, by TICA (The International Cat Association, Inc.). The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) accepted the breed for registration in 1988.
